The £2 Chicken
Your probably wondering the same thing as myself, how on earth is this possible?
I saw last week that Tesco is selling Chickens for around £2 for a whole bird – that’s incredibly cheap. I know that for sometime now chicken has been at the heart of the supermarket price wars and indeed Asda sold the first £2 chickens last year.
It hardly takes much rocket science to work out that £2 has to be stretched a long way to cover the cost of feeding the bird, slaughtering it, disposing of the waste, transport etc etc.
It’s worth pointing out that according to recent government figures most foods have risen by 50 – 200% in the last 20 years, whilst chicken has risen by around just 15%.
But look at what is fueling the low prices, at what cost. these chickens are caged and people are becoming increasingly concerned about their welfare. Celebrity chefs are leading the crusade against the poor cheap chicken, their cruel rearing and the devaluing of lives. So what should we do, Fail to act and chickens continue to be reared in terrible conditions in order to fulfil their role as a price war bartering chip. After all, it is the feeding of the supermarket price war, not the families, that is driving the trend for ever-cheaper chickens.
Do we need to ban the kind of conditions that allow chickens to be produced at this price?

I think it is terrable, and there is no way I would want to eat any kind of meat that has been raised in such conditions. I think the supermarkets should be ashamed.
I have to agree, this is not on and something should be done about. I always use my local butcher in Ipswich in the knowledge that the chicken I get from there has lived a normal life.
